Pineapple, Caramel, Grapefruit in the aroma, giving way to mango and toasted coconut in the cup. An Impressive acidity supports the coffee as it finished with hints of strawberry guava and marshmallow.
Uluwehi Farms is a new farm planted 3 years ago in Holualoa, Kona at 1900ft elevation. The farm is planted half with Red Bourbon, half with SL34. Both varieties grown from seeds from trees Miguel selected for planting and the Hula Daddy Waiono farm a decade ago. The farm was planted by and is maintained by Kraig Lee of Kona farm direct. Back in November 2020 we featured the Bourbon variety from this farm which was rated 95 Points by Coffee Review!
This Year is only the second harvest of the SL34 and is showing a lot of promise. The Harvest was large enough this season to separate a small batch of the peaberries. just 40lb.
The SL34 variety is a selection made in the 1930's by Scott Laboratories in Kenya. It along with SL28 are two of the classic varieties of Kenya both known for exemplary cup quality. Very recent genetic comparisons have shown the SL34 variety to be distinct from the Typica/Bourbon group that comprises most cultivated coffee around the world and a match for some plants still being grown in Yemen today.
