Background Info
Our Darkest roast. If you like your coffee strong, heavy, and full bodied, this one is for you. Perfect for cream and sugar or pairing with a sweet pastry or cake.
Named after Basalt Lava which is characteristically Hard, dark, and black and quite common on our island home in Hawai‘i.
While we have designed this blend with filter coffee and french press applications in mind it also makes excellent espresso as well. Especially for milk drinks
This blend is composed of Arabica coffees from South-East Asia and Latin America as well as a touch of Robusta which helps to give an extra heavy mouthfeel and soften the acidity.
If you prefer to have little roasty smokiness and dark roast bitterness to your cup we suggest brewing with 201-203F water. If you prefer more sweetness and less of the dark roast bitterness try brewing with cooler water. 190-195F

Arabica coffee is prized for its complex and nuanced flavor profile, often featuring bright acidity, delicate floral and fruity notes, and a smooth, well-rounded body. This is mainly due to the unique characteristics of the Coffea arabica plant, which grows at higher altitudes and requires a more temperate climate than other coffee species, resulting in slower maturation and denser beans.
Quality is determined through a combination of factors, including altitude, climate, soil, and processing methods. Beans are often graded based on their size, shape, and the presence of defects. Specialty-grade Arabica coffee must meet strict quality standards, such as having minimal defects and exhibiting a high level of flavor complexity and clarity.
Arabica coffee can be enjoyed using various brewing methods, including pour-over, French press, AeroPress, and drip coffee makers. Each method highlights different aspects of the coffee's flavor profile, so experimentation is encouraged. Generally, Arabica coffee benefits from a finer grind and a slightly lower brewing temperature (195-205°F or 90-96°C) to extract its delicate flavors optimally.
