Description
Omkoi is one of the most remote areas in Thailand that grows coffee. It takes a 4 hour car ride from Chiang Mai city to get to the farm (this traveling time to get to farms in Thailand is rare). The difficulty of getting to this area means that illicit crops such as opium can still be found. Coffee in this area is thus being used as an alternative cash crop to replace opium plantation. Omkoi is one of Thailand's most famous regions for coffee. It is not unexpected to see coffees from this area appear in Top 10 producers' competition in Thailand. This specific lot is a fully washed coffee that's wet fermented for 24 hours and dried on plastic-covered raised beds. It is produced by a woman farmer and processor, Sopa. After working at an electronic parts factory in the city she decided to return home to Omkoi and try her hand at growing coffee. Sopa planted her farm in 2008 with a mix of Typica and Catuai at 1300m elevation. "Sopa's Estate" coffees are usually among the highest ranked in Thailand's annual cupping competition. This year her entry took 6th place.
