Malaysia is not a country most people associate with coffee. The have a long history of growing the Robusta and Liberia species, mostly for internal consumption. Arabica however has just begun commercial cultivation in the past 2 decades and is unknown until recently even to Malaysia's local roasters

This coffee comes from the massive island of Borneo of which Malaysia's Sabah province occupies the northern portion. Here sits the impressive Mt. Kinabalu, a popular tourist attraction. In the highlands around this mountain is where arabica can be found.

In November 2018 we visited Sabah to see what the potential of this new origin might be. Support and training from the local department of agriculture has been quite good and what we saw there were well kept farms and decent processing practices. Pulped coffee is fermented with water overnight and then dried on raised screens.

We suggested to some of the growers that they try doing a two stage fermentation process to hopefully produce a clearer more vibrant cup. a few months later we now have the first 20lb of coffee produced by this method to share with consumers out side of Malaysia for the very first time.

Coffee Review recently rated this coffee 90 points and had this to say "Sweetly tart, spice-toned. Dried black cherry, lantana, pipe tobacco, allspice, cedar in aroma and cup. Tart-leaning structure with brisk acidity; plush, syrupy mouthfeel. In the quiet, gently drying finish, fruit and florals recede and savory/spice notes, specifically pipe tobacco and cedar, are amplified."

What Is 100% Kona Coffee?

100% Kona coffee refers to coffee grown exclusively in the Kona district of Hawai‘i Island — a small, volcanic region
along the western slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa. The combination of mineral-rich soil, afternoon cloud cover, and gentle trade winds produces one of the world’s most distinctive coffee terroirs.

To be labeled “100% Kona Coffee,” every bean must be grown within the Kona district and meet strict Hawai‘i grading quality standards. Kona coffee can be made from different arabica varieties, but Kona Typica — a heirloom lineage — remains the region’s most common and traditional cultivar.
