Background Info

Gonzalo Hernandez likes to brag that he’s amassed the world’s largest private collection of coffees trees: more than two hundred species, botanical varieties, mutations and cultivars that grow on his exotic Costa Rican “coffee garden”, Coffea Diversa. His collection includes some of the rarest in the world -- coffees many have neither heard of nor tasted.

Of each variety Gonzalo has only a few trees, and his coffees are sold in small 10 kilogram bags to knowledgeable roasters and friends around the world, first come, first serve. We first visited Coffea diversa and met Gonzalo 10 years ago, and we’ve been looking forward to sharing these ever since.

Recently Coffea Diversa started a new farm in Suchitan, Guatemala. The second coffee we are featuring from their Guatemala farm this year is the Geisha Queen Variety.

At Coffea Diversa Costa Rica Gonzalo found some trees among his geisha that were shorter than the rest and with larger cherries. The Bean size is about the same size though, and the leaves are broader and the branches longer compared to most geisha. He calls this selection  'Geisha Queen'

The Flavor is fruitier compared to the more citrus leaning flavors of most geisha with an intriguing spiciness to the cup a bit reminiscent of ginger and mint.

What Is 100% Kona Coffee?

100% Kona coffee refers to coffee grown exclusively in the Kona district of Hawai‘i Island — a small, volcanic region
along the western slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa. The combination of mineral-rich soil, afternoon cloud cover, and gentle trade winds produces one of the world’s most distinctive coffee terroirs.

To be labeled “100% Kona Coffee,” every bean must be grown within the Kona district and meet strict Hawai‘i grading quality standards. Kona coffee can be made from different arabica varieties, but Kona Typica — a heirloom lineage — remains the region’s most common and traditional cultivar.
