Tasting Notes
Despite being a natural, this coffee shows the classic Washed Geisha flavors of Bergamot, jasmine, chamomile, and papaya. Sweet and delicate with an incomparable acidity.
In the 2024 Best of Panama cupping competition another harvest date of the Vuelta DRD took 1st place in the Geisha Naturals category with a score of 95.13 and sold for a all time record price of $10,013/kg ($4542/lb) We were among the group that purchased this auction lot, securing 500g for a handful of our customers. We asked Wilford Lamastus to prepare for us another 10kg lot of coffee the most similar to the auction winning coffee to offer to our customers for the holidays.
"Richly aromatic, complex, multi-layered. Star jasmine, blood orange, cocoa nib, lychee, marjoram in aroma and cup. Vibrant, sparkling (phosphoric) acidity; elegant, silky-smooth mouthfeel. Long, aromatic, flavor-saturated finish."
Elida Estate
The Lamastus Family has being producing coffee in Elida Estate for four generations since 1918. Elida Estate coffees are produced under a unique world-ecological condition: it is shade-grown, bird-friendly, the farm is located at a very high elevation, in a microclimate with very low temperatures, the coffee trees are surrounded by the Volcan Baru National Park -a virgin native cloudy rain forest-.
At the turn of the 20th century, Kentucky born Robert Lamastus started an Arabica coffee plantation in a farm located at around 5,600 ft (1 700 m) above sea level in the skirts of the Baru Volcano in Boquete, Panama. At the time he processed and exported what is still today considered as one of the highest quality coffees in the world. Nowadays and three generations later the tradition continues, the Lamastus family, still produces, processes, exports, and now roast its own rare estate coffees.
Elida Estate is the highest coffee farm in Panama located between 5,500 and 8,200 ft (1.700 and 2.500m) above sea level.
The VUELTA lot is the highest elevation fully productive lot at Elida Estate. It is entirely located within the Baru Volcano National Park (BVNP), the most biodiverse coffee area of Boquete, providing a unique and rare terroir ideal for growing Geisha.
More than half of this farm is located within the Volcan Baru National Park a protected ecological reserve and sanctuary for exotic plants, birds and mammals (like the tropical tiger). Hunting has been prohibited in this farm for decades. The Baru volcano is one of the highest volcanoes in Central America, with 14,000ha and 7 different climate zones depending on the elevation. Coffee in this farm is grown up to 1960m.
This coffee is produced under a unique world-condition for several reasons: first the farm is located at a very high elevation, it is grown in rich young volcanic soils, the temperatures are low, there is lots of fog and mist during the dry season, the coffee trees are surrounded by virgin-native cloudy rain forest, the nights get cold here thereby taking a tree from 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 years to start producing (2 or 3 years longer to produce than average), these low temperatures also extend the ripening time 1 month longer (thereby the development of the bean). All these unique growing conditions show in a distinguished cup.
The Vuelta DRD Natural coffee undergoes anaerobic fermentation for 3 days in sealed plastic bags and is then dried in the new dark room (DRD) This room is climate controlled for humidity and temperature and is kept dark, preventing potential degradation on volatile aromatic compounds by UV.

Our commitment to you is to serve exceptional, fresh-roasted coffees. And part of being exceptional means roasting before the flavors inherent in the green bean begin to fade, which happens over time.
Like apples and pumpkins, coffee is a seasonal agricultural product and each country has a different harvesting cycle in which coffees are at their peak. If we were to insist on serving a single origin all year long, the flavors in that coffee would be noticeably better one half of the year over the other. So the reason you no longer see that coffee you loved is because the optimal season has passed. For more on seasonality in coffees, see this blog post here.
Hopefully so. If it was a popular product or we receive customer requests, we will make every attempt to bring it back. However, please note that coffees from a certain producer may not taste the same year after year.
If you loved a coffee and no longer see it listed, shoot us an email and ask us what is similar. We’d be happy to provide a personal recommendation.
We aim for balance and completeness along with differentiation and distinction. You shouldn't need to be a professional coffee taster to tell the coffees a part, so, when we’re selecting coffees, we want them to be distinct from each other.
We avoid ”one-trick pony” type coffees, such as Ethiopians with great aroma but no body or acidity, or coffees with good aroma and acidity but lacking sweetness. These elements, which are often reflections of the growing conditions, are harmonized through good roasting.
And, obviously, defects — even subtle defects — influence our selection. Since we live and work at origin, we’re sensitive to coffee defects like “past crop”, pulpy, and naturals that border on over-ferment. With naturals, we’ll only carry these when great examples are available.
Our perspective on roasting is similar: we seek balance and distinction. To expect that a coffee is “best” when roasted to some pre-determined degree (i.e. only light roasting or only dark roasting) is analogous to thinking that each person would look best in the same outfit, or each coffee should be grown in the same way. We believe it’s our job to discover the roast degree which best highlights outstanding qualities in each coffee.
