Kona Peaberry - Darnall Estate
Tasting Notes
Balance personified. Hints of papaya and citrus in the aroma lead into a cup with a brown sugar-like sweetness. Balanced and lively.
Background Info
Darnall Estate is a 46-acre farm in Holualoa. In December 2023, we featured their Kona Cupping competition-winning Extra Fancy. This peaberry selection is another offering from the same harvest. Rather than the largest beans – Extra Fancy grade – these are the 'peaberries': small, rounded seeds that form when only one seed develops inside the cherry, as opposed to the usual two. Peaberries usually comprise only 3-7% of the harvest.
This coffee was processed as a traditional washed coffee. Cherries are pulped on the evening of harvest, fermented overnight with a little water added to the tank, and then dried in a mechanical drying machine.
Compared to the Extra Fancy, this coffee has slightly more acidity. The flavor profile is less floral but more fruited, leaning towards papaya and red apple.
