Black Basalt Blend

Bold • Polished • Volcanic

Named for Hawai‘i’s volcanic rock, Black Basalt is our statement blend for those who love deeper tones without harshness. Roasted with precision for gravity and gloss, it brings dark-toned sweetness and calm power to your daily ritual.

Character & Style

  • Tasting Notes: Dark chocolate, molasses, roasted hazelnut, gentle smoke, black cherry
  • Body: Full, velvety
  • Finish: Long and cocoa-rich with a clean, mesquite edge
  • Roast Profile: Dark (deep, assertive, yet composed)

Blend Composition

A seasonal composition anchored by Southeast Asian lots for structure and sweetness, layered with select Central American coffees for depth and resonance. Each component is chosen to deliver a polished, modern dark profile—intense yet composed.

Brewing Recommendations

  • Drip / Pour-over: 1:16, 88–90 °C / 190–194 °F; 3:00–3:30 total brew
  • French Press: 1:15, coarse grind, 4:00 steep; gentle plunge
  • Espresso (robust shot): 1:2 in 24–26 s for syrupy body and dark chocolate core
  • Milk Pairing: Excellent in cappuccino/latte; retains definition and cocoa depth

Service & Storage

  • Rest: Peaks 4–14 days post-roast for maximum sweetness and crema
  • Storage: Keep sealed and cool; enjoy within 3–4 weeks of opening

Forged from volcanic inspiration, Black Basalt brings a bold yet refined expression to the Foundation Collection—crafted for those who prefer depth without compromise.

Basalt dark roast blend

"Disappointed. Not as dark and bold as I'd expected it would be. My personal preference is a darker, bolder more oily bean. I'm sure others will enjoy it. . . . just not my cup of joe."

Richard J. (2/5)

"puchased from paradise a few times. loved them all so far. havent cracked this one yet, but i’m sure it won’t disappoint. thank you."

Bold and Tasty

"I rated this coffee 8 out of 10. It is definitely a dark coffee drinker's blend. It had a strong enjoyable flavor and aroma. It did however seem to have a slightly unpleasant after-taste (or finish)"

Chocolate Bomb Capuccino

"So far only brewed as cappuccino. Predominant chocolate tones, almost like chocolate fudge."

Basalt was excellent - and

"Basalt was excellent - and even more so if you’re a fan of rich, full-bodied coffee. I was surprised how good of an espresso it was, especially as a latte. I also made it as an Americano. Nuevo is my go-to, but I work in Basalt to change the flavor profile. They compliment each other well - and you only need to go slightly finer on the grind when switching to Basalt from Nuevo - so there is limited waste when dialing in. Strongly recommend!!"

What Is 100% Kona Coffee?

100% Kona coffee refers to coffee grown exclusively in the Kona district of Hawai‘i Island — a small, volcanic region
along the western slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa. The combination of mineral-rich soil, afternoon cloud cover, and gentle trade winds produces one of the world’s most distinctive coffee terroirs.

To be labeled “100% Kona Coffee,” every bean must be grown within the Kona district and meet strict Hawai‘i grading quality standards. Kona coffee can be made from different arabica varieties, but Kona Typica — a heirloom lineage — remains the region’s most common and traditional cultivar.
