California's Coastal Geisha

Just north of Santa Barbara, Rancho Arroyo Alamar sits along California's rugged Gaviota Coast, where cool Pacific mornings and warm afternoon sunshine create one of the world's most distinctive coffee-growing environments.

Rather than relying on tropical altitude, the farm benefits from northern latitude and strong marine influence. Cool nights dramatically slow cherry development, allowing the fruit to mature over 10–11 months—creating exceptional sweetness, aromatic complexity, and remarkable structure.

The result is a coffee that captures the elegance of classic washed Geisha while expressing a character entirely its own.

A Different Path to Complexity

Most great coffees are defined by where they're grown.

This one is defined by how beautifully California expresses the Geisha variety.

According to FRINJ founder Derek Peters:

"We grow at this elevation deliberately because the combination of coastal influence and northern latitude creates diurnal temperature swings comparable to farms around 1,800 meters in Panama. This produces an extended cherry ripening period of around 10–11 months—the same slow maturation responsible for the complexity typically associated with high-elevation tropical coffee."

Rather than tropical altitude, California relies on climate. The destination is the same: exceptional cup quality.

Precision Processing

This lot was selectively hand-picked at peak ripeness before floating to remove defects.

The cherries were then inoculated with a carefully selected fermentation yeast and underwent a 72-hour cold fermentation and a slow two-week drying period on raised beds.

The process was designed to enhance sweetness and aromatic clarity while preserving the transparent expression that defines great washed Geisha.

Paradise & California Coffee

Paradise Coffee Roasters has followed California coffee since the earliest commercial plantings.

Over the years we've cupped coffees from many of the state's pioneering producers, selecting only the lots that meet the same standards we apply to every coffee we roast.

We don't buy California coffee because it's unusual.

We buy it because, when climate, farming, processing, and roasting come together, it produces a cup worthy of standing beside the finest coffees in our collection.

Rancho Arroyo Alamar is one of those coffees.
