Body: Full, creamy
Acidity: Bright, malic
Production: Approximately 5 lb

Overview

Liberica is one of the world’s least commonly encountered commercial coffee species. Compared with Arabica, it often produces a more unusual and expansive cup, with distinctive fruit, floral, and confection-like aromatics.

This tiny lot from Kona Farm Direct yielded only about five pounds of finished coffee, making it one of the smallest releases we have offered.

Processed as a Champagne Natural, the coffee presents a highly distinctive profile: bright green apple, ripe jackfruit, candy-like sweetness, and a soft toasted-marshmallow finish.

Origin

This coffee was produced by Kona Farm Direct in Kona, Hawai‘i.

While Kona is best known for Arabica varieties such as Typica and Geisha, this lot offers a rare look at how Liberica expresses itself in the region’s volcanic soils and tropical growing conditions.

The extremely limited production reflects both the scarcity of Liberica plantings in Kona and the small experimental scale of this harvest.

Liberica

Liberica is a separate coffee species from Arabica, recognized for its large trees, oversized cherries, and unconventional sensory character.

Its flavor profile can be broader and more exotic than traditional Arabica, often showing tropical fruit, florals, spice, and confection-like sweetness. This lot retains that unmistakable Liberica character while presenting it with unusual clarity and balance.

Process & Roast Style

The cherries were processed using a Champagne Natural method developed to encourage expressive aromatics and layered sweetness while maintaining a clean finish.

Drying the coffee in the fruit helps intensify its tropical character, while the controlled fermentation contributes a lightly confection-like quality.

Our light roast preserves the coffee’s bright green-apple acidity and unusual fruit aromatics, allowing the species and process to remain clearly recognizable.

Cup Profile

Expect an unconventional and highly aromatic cup.

Notes of sugar-free fruit candy and ripe jackfruit lead the profile, followed by crisp green apple acidity. As the cup cools, a soft sweetness reminiscent of toasted marshmallow emerges in the finish.

The result is tropical, candy-like, and unlike nearly anything in our current collection.

Extremely Limited Release

Only approximately five pounds of this coffee were produced.

Because of the tiny quantity, availability will be highly restricted and may be limited by bag size or purchase quantity.

Bottom Line

A remarkably rare Kona-grown Liberica produced in a five-pound micro-lot by Kona Farm Direct. Its Champagne Natural process reveals an unconventional profile of fruit candy, jackfruit, green apple, and toasted marshmallow—a distinctive release for collectors and adventurous coffee drinkers.

What Is 100% Kona Coffee?

100% Kona coffee refers to coffee grown exclusively in the Kona district of Hawai‘i Island — a small, volcanic region
along the western slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa. The combination of mineral-rich soil, afternoon cloud cover, and gentle trade winds produces one of the world’s most distinctive coffee terroirs.

To be labeled “100% Kona Coffee,” every bean must be grown within the Kona district and meet strict Hawai‘i grading quality standards. Kona coffee can be made from different arabica varieties, but Kona Typica — a heirloom lineage — remains the region’s most common and traditional cultivar.
