Prices at auctions have only continued to sky rocket. This year reaching over $4500.00/lb for green coffee in the Best of Panama online auction. An incredible $10/gram or $150+ for 1 cup worth.

Fast forward nearly 20 years later, Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha of Boquete is still one of the most stunning coffees in the world and the most quintessential representation of the geisha variety flavor profile.

We have been tasting Geisha coffees from Esmeralda every year since 2004 and to us this coffee is still the standard we compare all other coffees of this variety to.

Jaramillo

The original plantings of Geisha at Hacienda La Esmeralda were in an area called Jaramillo at 1500-1700m. A neighboring farm - Don Pachi estate had introduced the Geisha variety from CATIE in Costa Rica in the 1960's. Don Pachi Serracin shared this variety with his neighbors at Mama Cata estate and Esmeralda. There are many newer plantings of geisha variety in Panama that are much higher in elevation. These coffees are even more Floral, and incomparably high in acidity. But they don't have the same balance of Bergamot, tropical fruit, and floral notes that the original coffees from Jaramillo have.
