Tasting Notes

A sweet and refreshing cup. aromas of ripe peaches, flowers, and oranges. Green tea lemon curd and berries in the cup with a weightier mouthfeel than most Ethiopian coffees.

Background Info

The coffees of Western Ethiopia are less famous than the eastern regions of Yirgacheffe and Sidamo but some excellent coffees can be found here. It is in these areas that coffee is native to and countless local varieties exist here. Much of this coffee is still casually naturally processed and sold more towards commercial grades than the specialty market.

Nano Challa Cooperative became one of the firsts groups in the Agaro region to start producing washed coffees 10 years ago. The cooperative has more than 400 members which average about 1 acre of coffee each. Ripe cherries are brought to be processed on a Penagos demucilaging pulper from Colombia. The fruit is mechanically scrubbed off and then the parchment soaked in clean water overnight before drying on raised screens under shade for about 10 days.
