Tasting Notes

We find this coffee to have an impressive acidity and the type of crystal clear, transparent, tea-like cup found amongst top competition winning coffees with flavors of tangerine, lime, grapefruit, peach, and flowers

Background Info

Earlier this Year Ethiopia Held its first ever Cup of Excellence Competition and auction. We were fortunate enough to be offered one of it's National Winner's Coffee from importer Keffa Coffee. They cupped through all 40 lots in the auction and after the 1st and 2nd place winners found that a lower ranked natural from Ato Yidnekachew Seleshi was their favorite. Ato is a 26-year-old farmer in West Guji, Hambella Wamena woreda. He started his own coffee business in 2015 fresh out of university. He is a third generation coffee producer whose grandfather  working in coffee for the past 52 years. Currently, Yidnekachew works with 180 outgrowers on 270 hectares and produces 170,000 kilograms of natural process coffee annually. 

Ato had this to say about the Cup of Excellence program

“This type of competition promotes the country and our exceptional coffee. Compared to the quality and variety, we have not done much to market our coffee,” said Yidnekachew. “We should promote our producers, and their specific locations, and I believe this competition will help us achieve more. It will bring good prices, encourages positive competition, and supports farmers to produce quality.”

Finding a single variety offering from Ethiopia is quite rare. While Ethiopian coffees are often claimed to be harvested from 'wild' or 'heirloom' varieties this really isn't quite accurate. Since the 1970's JARC- Jimma Agricultural Research Center has been selecting, breeding, and distributing dozens of varieties to growers. One of these is the 74110 variety, which was collected from Metu, Illubabor in Western Ethiopia in the late 1970's. It was selected for it's resistance to coffee berry disease and is now widely planted in Guji.
