Actually they have a fairly long history of coffee cultivation there, but almost all of the coffee is consumed domestically. Typica trees were brought from Kona to Southern Taiwan more than 80 years ago while Taiwan was a colony of Japan. Plantations were established in the mountains of Pingtung and tended to by Indigenous Paiwan tribe farmers. Coffee production was abandoned for decades, but as Taiwan's café culture and coffee consumption grew over the past 2-3 decades, the old trees were used as parent material to establish new farms around Paiwan villages. One of these villages is called Taiwu. Our green buyer Miguel began working with growers from this village in 2010 to help improve quality. This past November Miguel returned to Taiwan to teach the producers our 'Champagne natural' process.
