Tasting Notes

Cola, Brown sugar, and grilled pineapple in the aroma. A powerful cup like one would expect from Sumatra but much sweeter and with less herbaceous and spicy notes than traditional wet-hulled versions. Hints of grapefruit, tropical fruits and candied coconut in the cup.

Background Info

Most coffees from this Sumatra are wet-hulled, process that, when executed well, results in the heavier mouthfeel and the range of earthy, woody, and spicy aromas Sumatran coffees are known and loved for. And when poorly done - as many Sumatran coffees are - it can leave the coffee tasting flat, musty and rancid.  This coffee however is a dry-hulled coffee, similar to coffees from most other origins such as Central America and Colombia.

As a result the flavor profile is much different than what one usually expects from Sumatra. Cleaner, sweeter, more transparent in its flavors. This coffee comes from Gayo in Northern Sumatra. Processed at the MKG mill operated by Asman Ariento. Cherry is collected from small growers in the surrounding Pantan Musara area at 1500-1600m elevation. These coffees are fermented overnight and then dried on a combination of green house covered raised drying beds and patios. Asman has been doing great work showing a completely different spectrum of flavors from this Origin.

In Cup of Excellence's recent cupping competition, the 2019 Sumatra Prestige cup his entries took 3rd and 5th place. We certainly agree he is producing some extraordinary coffees.

Coffee Review had this to say about our 2019 Sumatra Pantan Musara:

"93 points. Richly and vivaciously sweet-savory. Pipe tobacco, date, grapefruit zest, spearmint, rose-like flowers in aroma and cup. Sweetly tart and deeply savory, almost meaty in structure. Syrupy but crisply drying mouthfeel. Flavor consolidates around grapefruit, spearmint and rose in a savory-bottomed, lasting finish. "

Overall rating: 4.75 / 5 from 4 reviews.

"One of the biggest citrus cups I have ever had. It took 10 fewer grams in the V60 to bring it under control. Then it became a special and delicious coffee."

I’ve been buying beans from

"I’ve been buying beans from high end roasters for over a decade and Paradise is on another level. This Sumatra is only my second purchase from Paradise but it and the first purchase, an Ethiopian, have been the most remarkably delicious, flavorful and incredible pour overs I’ve ever enjoyed. Thanks for making such wonderful coffee! Bravo!"

What Is 100% Kona Coffee?

100% Kona coffee refers to coffee grown exclusively in the Kona district of Hawai‘i Island — a small, volcanic region
along the western slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa. The combination of mineral-rich soil, afternoon cloud cover, and gentle trade winds produces one of the world’s most distinctive coffee terroirs.

To be labeled “100% Kona Coffee,” every bean must be grown within the Kona district and meet strict Hawai‘i grading quality standards. Kona coffee can be made from different arabica varieties, but Kona Typica — a heirloom lineage — remains the region’s most common and traditional cultivar.
